木材の特性の一つは、同じものが二つないということである。人柄が違 うように木柄が違う。それを組み合わせるところに木工技術のコツがあ るわけだが、その同じでないところが面白く、柔らかな味があって、生 き物といった親しさがある。全部が同じ寸法で、全く同じ材質のもので できていると、精巧さには感心するが、なんとなく冷たくて親しみにく い。機械的な美しさはあるが生き物という感じはしないのである。
薬師寺は、西岡棟梁らによって、昭和五十一年に金堂の再建が完成し、 五十六年にまた西塔が建ち、現在中門を建設中である。ところで金堂の 建物に使ったタイワンヒノキは精巧な製材機械で挽いたから、部材の寸 法は正確で寸分の違いもない。それをヤリガンナで仕上げたのであるが、 できあがった建物をみると、どうも柔らかさが足りない。東塔の姿が筆 で書いた墨絵の線であるとすれば、金堂は機械製図の烏口の線といった 感じである。正確であるには違いないが、どこか冷たくて人間くささに 欠けている。
