木の一番大きな特徴は、木目があるということであろう。気候に寒暖 の差がある地帯に生える樹木には、一年ごとに年輪ができる。年輪の幅 は、樹齢、土壌、気温、湿度、日照などの記録であるから、年輪にはそ の年の樹木の歴史が刻みこまれる。
高温多雨の条件に恵まれた熱帯地方の樹木は年輪をつくらない。年中 生長をつづけることができるからである。しかし乾季と雨季の交代のは げしいところでは年輪ができる。樹木はまた偽年輪をつくることもある。 生長期に洪水や旱天に見舞われたり、葉を害虫に食われたりすると生長 が止まり、回復すると再び生長を続けるので、一年に二つの年輪ができ ることがある。つまり木目は幾星霜の風雪に耐えた木の履歴書なのであ る。
人間にもまた年輪がある。それは精神の中に刻み込まれるから、樹木 の年輪のように定かではないが、その人の経験と生きる努力の中から生 まれるものである。だからわれわれは木の年輪の複雑な文様の中に、自 然と人間との対話を感じ取る。それが木肌の魅力の最大のものといえよ う。したがって木は人によって生かされ、人によって使いこまれたとき、 本当の美しさがにじみ出てくるのである。
