私たちはつい最近まで、木材は時代遅れの原始的な素材だと思っていた。 だからそれに新しい技術を加え、工業材料のレベルに近づけることが 進歩だと考えた。その結果、改良木材と呼ばれるものが次々に生み出 された。それらは従来の木材の欠点を補い、大量の需要に応じ、生活を 豊かにするのに大きく役立ってきた。たしかに木材工業は発展してきたのである。
だが一方、最近になって、一つの疑問が持たれはじめてきたように 思う。それは木材というものは自然の形のまま使ったときが一番よくて、 手を加えれば加えるほど本来のよさが失われていくのではないか、と いう反省である。考えてみるとそれは当たり前のことだったかもしれ ない。木は何千万年もの長い時間をかけて、自然の摂理に合うように、 少しずつ体質を変えながらできあがってきた生き物だったはずである。 木材や木は自然の子で、そのままが最良なのである。
