ヒノキでつくったバイオリンは和風の響きがする
さる有名なバイオリンづくりの名人は、ヒノキは世界に誇る優秀な木材だから、それで名器をつくろうと苦心していた。私はそのお手伝い をして、バイオリンの用材を人工的に老化させてみたことがある。ま ず木曾ヒノキの同じ部分から四枚の板をとり、一つを残し、それぞれ 五十年、百年、二百年を目標に老化の処理をした。それを使ってバイ オリンをつくり試してみたところ、古いものほど音色がよく、二百年 処理のものがいちばん優れていることがわかった。
ところでその名人によると、ヒノキでつくったバイオリンは、どう しても和風の響きがするというのである。もともとバイオリンは、ト ウヒとカエデを組み合わせてできたものである。使用する樹種も形も、 十六世紀後半に定まり、それ以後、近代科学の改良案もほとんど寄せ つけないほどに完成した、手工芸の結晶である。ほかの樹種に置き換 えるのが難しいことはよくわかる。だが、ヒノキのバイオリンは和風 の響きがするというのはおもしろい。
